Makers Midnight Commercial Bed Base

A bed base that arrives flat and goes up without tools.

Anyone who has tried to carry a fully upholstered bed base up a staircase or into a lift knows why this exists. The Makers Midnight Commercial Bed Base is delivered flat packed and assembles with a lug and slot system and quick-click corner brackets. No tools. A star thumb screw locks the brackets so the base stays rigid when it is moved.

Assembled, it reads as an ordinary upholstered base. Padded black microsuede sides give it a clean, uniform finish, which means no valance is needed to make the bed look finished.

The engineering is where it earns its place. The slats are plywood rather than pine, which is the single most common breakage point on a traditional base, and on the wider Double, Queen and King sizes a metal support bar runs end to end beneath the slats to spread the load. The legs fit into metal corner brackets rather than screwing into a timber frame, which is the other place these bases usually fail.

Mobility is built in: castor wheels at the head so the bed rolls out for making, and rigid glide legs at the foot for stability. King Split and Super King Split bases join with a sturdy bracket connected to the inside corner brackets.

There's more to it than first meets the eye. Every part is replaceable, including the slats and the outer fabric, so sun fading or a single broken slat does not write off the base. The non-slip top platform fabric that stops the mattress sliding is replaceable too, and available in different colours. It can also be completely dismantled, which makes individual parts far easier to treat than a sealed, enclosed base.

It fits standard industry mattress sizes and can be bought on its own, without a mattress. Side height is 26cm on a 10cm default castor leg, with 5cm and 15cm leg options available. Note that the base does not come with pre-drilled bolt holes for a standard headboard.
